Dr Judy Rose

This workshop provides an introduction to thematic coding and analysis of data from semi-structured interviews. We illustrate these techniques using an interview study conducted on big data linkage (Rose et al., 2021). Firstly, we characterise thematic analysis (TA) and distinguish it from other analytic methods commonly applied to textual data, such as content analysis and text mining. We consider qualitative methods for coding themes via a methodical approach, involving immersion and open coding, to revisiting coding, multiple coding and validating by comparing with theory. In practice, this process may involve deductive logic to use pre-specified themes (from the literature) or inductive logic to infer unexpected or new information. This clarifies key aspect of reproducible thematic analysis, in defining the unit of analysis, coding, and specifying deductive/inductive analysis. We cover quantitative methods of analysis of themes, such as frequencies and coverage, preparing data for an integrative mixed analysis approach, in the workshop on Mixing Clustering in with Thematic Analysis of Interviews.

Pre-requisites: This builds on 7 workshops in the Foundation of Mixed Methods theme. It is a companion to other training on Integrative mixed analysis and Phenomenology. Further detail is provided on Basic quantitative techniques in mixed methods.
