Introduction to Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) Approaches

Principal speaker

Dr Judy Rose

Interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) forms a group of qualitative approaches to guide design and analysis of interviews. These approaches focus on the lived experience of the participants, and therefore require more in-depth interviewing than other methods. For this reason they suit situations where multiple interviews are conducted with few participants, when you really want to "drill down" into their experience of a phenomenon. This seminar introduces the main approaches to IPA using examples from the literature to demonstrate its use with data from interviews. We look at two distinct IPA approaches from Psychology and Education, along with the political debates that divide and unite them. First, is the descriptive-interpretive approach to IPA proposed by Jonathan Smith. The second approach, supported by Max van Manen, incorporates hermeneutic phenomenological reflection throughout the interviewing and analysis phases. This seminar concludes with an overview of challenges, benefits, constraints of using IPA approaches.

Pre-requisites: This seminar is related to the "Mixed Methods Foundations' workshops (MM 1-6) and has particular relevance to "Formulating Open-ended Questions for Interviews as Part of MM', and "Interviewing skills as part of MM' workshops.
