Form and Spirituality: A Conversation Between China and the West

Yang Qing

This exhibition explores form and the painting traditions in both Western and Chinese cultures. It uses the motifs of the Chinese Garden and the Western Cathedral to examine the possibilities of integrating these two contrasting traditions. Form in the Chinese context is focused on transformation. The form of great images of Chinese mountain and water paintings focuses on changes and tension in polarities-yang and yang--- to generate breath energy and vitality. Thus, the great image can only be valid when the form is in between the transformation of two polarities. Whereas form in the Western Formalism context refers to composition or arrangement. The work in this exhibition presents the possibilities of a combination of a Western contemporary approach with Chinese folk art to create artworks that are sensitive to Chinese and Western theories and concepts of form.

The works are also concerned with the spiritual. How can form evoke the spiritual? Through the depiction of traditional Chinese gardens and Cathedrals, and drawing upon Chinese and Western theories, this exhibition reflects upon how form and the use of colour, composition and perspective can create a sense of the spiritual.
