Principal speaker

Dr Judy Rose

For this first-time delivery as a seminar, we will describe how the research method that researchers choose will inform the kinds of ethical issues they will have to address in an ethics application. We explain that placing method at the centre of research ethics starts by acknowledging how method directly shapes your choice of instrument, as well as the protocol for using that instrument. For example, ethical considerations differ depending on whether you are conducting interviews with vulnerable groups, at a round table forum, or through multiple interviews preparing for Interpretive Phenomenology Analysis (IPA). Importantly, when seeking ethics approval, researchers must provide sufficient detail describing the research method and its impost on participants, as well as justifying this impost by justifying the method. For instance, different levels of detail and justification would be required to select survey participants randomly, or by screening them by taking blood to diagnose gestational diabetes.

We emphasize that whilst the ethics review panel DO NOT assess the suitability of your research method, they do need to see evidence that you can justify the impost on participants. This includes evidence of a critical inquiry of your research methods, which matches the research questions you have formulated. We note how application for ethics approval necessarily follows on from peer review of the research proposal (e.g., via Confirmation of Candidature, or funding proposal).
