Associate Professor Michelle Langley

Join us for the launch of "A Record in Bone: Exploring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Bone and Tooth Objects' by Associate Professor Michelle Langley and published by Aboriginal Studies Press.

Hear about the vibrant living technologies of Indigenous Australia and the archaeology of these diverse tools and ornaments. Bone tools and ornaments have been made by Australia's First Peoples for at least 46,000 years and, despite their beauty, sophistication, and ubiquity, have largely been ignored by archaeologists in favour of their stone counterparts.
Stemming from research conducted over four years, this volume draws together all published information regarding Indigenous osseous (bone, tooth) and keratin (claw, pull) technologies and integrates it with data that have been hiding away in museum databases for too long. Written for the undergraduate student or interested public, this work hopes to raise awareness of Australia's unique and innovative industries in bone, tooth, quill, and claw and serves as a starting point for connecting current archaeological understandings of osseous technology with Indigenous knowledge about these organic objects.

Books will be available to purchase and the author will be available for signing.
