Practical Planning and Conducting Focus Groups

Principal speaker

Leigh-Chantelle Koch

This workshop provides practical techniques for conducting focus groups online (and in person) when using mixed methods. We address the pre-focus group organising needs, including physical and technology requirements. Then, we provide examples of procedures used at the start. These include building rapport, introduction, confidentiality. During focus groups important issues are: randomisation, facilitating a safe space for all participants to share their views, defining terms, managing social desirability bias. Lastly, we address how to conclude. Finally, we discuss specific challenges of conducting (online) focus groups, including technology limitations, interpersonal skills and group dynamics, time, and energy management.
