The King & Wood Mallesons First Nations Art Award is a biennial competition that supports, showcases, and celebrates the highest standard of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art practice in Australia. Opening from 14 September to 14 October at Griffith University Art Museum, the Award will be held for the first time in Brisbane in 2023.
The major King & Wood Mallesons First Nations Art Award is $25,000, the QLD Local Artist Award is $5,000, and two, People's Choice Awards are valued at $1,000 each. Each prize is non-acquisitive. Previous winners are Michelle Woody (Tiwi Islands, NT) in 2020 and Teena McCarthy (Barkindji) in 2018.
The distinguished judging panel including renowned First Nations journalist, writer, documentary maker, broadcaster and sound artist, Daniel Browning, writer, project manager and consultant Emma Loban, Curator Indigenous Australian Art QAGOMA, Katina Davidson and artist, researcher, curator, and cultural scholar, Warraba Weatherall. The Exhibition Patron Djon Mundine OAM is a highly accomplished curator, writer, artist, and activist.
Finalists will be on display at the Award Exhibition from 14 September - 15 October 2023 at Griffith University Art Museum . Entry is free, transport and insurance of the selected finalists' artworks from regional depots across Australia is provided.
Griffith University Art Museum is open Tuesdays - Saturdays, 11am - 4pm. We are closed on public holidays and during exhibition installation periods.
