After more than a year of crunching the numbers, the 2022 Countess Report is finally here!

Join us for the Queensland launch of the 3rd edition of this landmark report on gender representation in the Australian art sector, hosted by Griffith University Art Museum (GUAM).
In a panel discussion chaired by GUAM Director and SHEILA Foundation board member Angela Goddard, Countess co-editors Miranda Samuels and Shevaun Wright will be joined by Sāmoan-Australian artist Chantal Fraser, whose recent exhibition The Ascended was held at GUAM in 2023 and is now touring regional Queensland until 2025.

Together the panel will present the Report's findings and methodology, discuss the importance of holding institutions accountable in their commitment to women and gender diverse artists, and discuss how opportunities for women, gender-diverse and First Nations artists enrich Australia's cultural sector overall. Audience members will be invited to ask questions and provide feedback on the Report and its data.

About the Countess Report:

In 2016, the first Countess Report revealed in detail that an imbalance of power existed in the Australian art world. Men held more positions at senior levels, and despite 75% of art school graduates being female, were significantly better represented across the sector.

Co-edited by Miranda Samuels and Shevaun Wright, the 2022 Countess Report continues Countess's long-standing inquiry into the structures and frameworks that govern the Australian contemporary art world and comprises data on 21,000 artists across more than 450 galleries and arts institutions nationally, as well as data on acquisitions and exhibitions held within the major State and Territory galleries in 2022.

The Countess Report aims to hold arts institutions accountable to their representational and diversity strategies and contribute to, and challenge, existing research around value and artistic success, especially where the impact of gender, race, and class dynamics is obscured or downplayed.
