Description
Dr Louise Porter discusses the course Criminology Skills, and the practical and academic skills students are introduced to to better prepare them for employment in the criminology field.
Challenge
This course was designed to better prepare students for a range of potential careers in criminology and criminal justice. By completing this core course, students are provided with the key practical and academic skills required to later succeed in their academic and professional lives.
By providing opportunities for self reflection and skills assessment, students are better equipped to take advantage of career and study opportunities based on their own career goals and needs.
Feedback showed development and improvement of communication, critical thinking and researching abilities were achievable outcomes that students found helpful in applying in further study.
Approach
Dr Porter introduces her students to source materials commonly used in critical evaluation, and then processes are used to strengthen their key communication skills.
Various online video clips of interviews with industry professionals and stakeholders, and an element of groupwork all add to this endeavour in teaching students how to write for different audiences.
The value of work placements and internships, as offered through Griffith careers service, is also discussed.
Outcomes
Student feedback has shown that the course is certainly relevant and useful in providing the skillset required to further improve their studies and calibre of performance in undertaking their chosen career in criminology and criminal justice.
